Happy birthday, Navy Pier! You are now the grand old age of 108, congratulations! To help you celebrate, Chicago’s newest and most popular attraction, Flyover, threw you a little party, complete with Eli’s cheesecake!
Flyover, is the wildly successful attraction that allows guests to “fly” over the beloved and dazzling city of Chicago through an exhilarating flying journey. Flyover is a multi-sensory experience featuring impressive aerial shots and first-person narratives, along with leading drone technologies, to showcase Chicago from perspectives never seen by audiences before.
Flyover’s signature Chicago journey is shown on an impressive 65-foot spherical screen with flight motion seats engineered to swoop, dip and turn, giving guests the feeling of flight. The attraction transports 60 guests at a time, with complete sensory immersion using wind, mist and scents, as fliers hang suspended.
The entire Flyover experience lasted about 30 minutes. First, you enter an immersive room with videos and images of Chicago, while getting a talk from a guide about what you will experience during Flyover. In the next room, you watch a brief video on instructions and safety protocol when seated during the immersive experience. You are taught how to buckle yourself in and where to stow away your personal belongings.
Finally, you are seated in your seat, buckled in and the ride begins! This experience is not for the faint of heart, or anyone who gets dizzy easily, or has a fear of flying or heights. (There were some moments when I had to close my eyes, as we all took a “nosedive” into the city streets).
You are literally a “bird” and flying on a journey through Chicago including flying above Lake Michigan, over traffic on busy streets, basketball courts, Millennium Park and the Bean, The Chicago Theater, City Skyscrapers and much more. This was the most realistic and exhilarating VR immersive journey I have ever experienced. It is not to be missed!
After the Flyover experience, I wished Navy Pier its 108th birthday by snacking on a slice of the famous Eli’s Cheesecake, which was delicious and creamy, resulting in a perfect finale to the birthday celebration.
You can celebrate Navy Pier’s birthday all summer long by coming to check out Flyover Chicago, while also enjoying everything that this amazing historical and iconic landmark has to offer. Stop by soon and wish Navy Pier a very happy birthday, while also exploring our amazing city virtually!
