In a one of a kind event that merges art and medicine, photographer, Sylvia Kouveli and artist, Ted Meyer present an awareness exhibition of their collaborative work entitled #bOObs for Life at the Perfect Exposure Gallery in Alhambra, commencing October 8, 2019, with an opening reception on October 12th, 2019.

Supported by the American Cancer Society, the exhibit contains bold, un-retouched photographs of female breasts and striking mono-prints of their various scars. The subjects of these photos are brave women who have endured physical trauma yet have managed to turn adversity into a celebration of life, their altered body parts often a symbol of strength, pride and resilience.

Sylvia Kouveli’s daring depictions are meant to motivate not only the subject but also the viewer to proactively monitor their breast health. Her work often has a social context from labor inclusion to human trafficking. Her lens now turns to societal taboos and how they can often prove detrimental to our health. She believes that by avoiding euphemisms and saying things as they are, we can better understand ourselves.

Ted Meyer, meanwhile, expertly portrays the beauty and humor of physicality as he explores the human condition through his photography and tales of resilient survivors. His work consists of artistically enhanced monoprints taken directly from the scarred skin of his subjects. Each image tells a unique story of medical crisis, resilience and healing.

“We try to show important work here at the gallery” states Armando Arorizo, owner of The Perfect Exposure. “I am thrilled to exhibit Sylvia and Ted’s stories and images and very proud to work with the American Cancer Society.”

Running for one week only, this is a show not to be missed.
