The Seychelles Islands are a true tropical paradise out in the middle of the Indian Ocean halfway around the world. If you’re going to take the leap for a truly extraordinary escape, you want to stay in a five-star hotel, someplace worthy of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. At the Savoy Seychelles Resort and Spa, you can can just that at a price that won’t break the bank.
Of all the five-star resorts on the islands, you will find that there are deals at the Savoy that put it in reach of anyone. Not only that, the Savoy is on the beautiful Beau Vallon Beach, which is one of the best beaches on the islands. This is no small advantage. One issue in the Seychelles is that not all the beaches are ideal for sand-and-surf lovers. Some are rocky. Some disappear at high tide. Even some other of the five-star hotels on the islands can’t really boast of great beaches.
The Beau Vallon beach is delicious. The waves are gentle and the sand is clean. The water is so clear you can see through the water like it was a swimming pool. There is a long promenade just off the beach so if you want to walk in the shade during the day or in the evening, you can amble with the sea off your shoulder and the palms overhead. The path out to the beach from the hotel takes you past a security guard because Beau Vallon is a public beach and the hotel wants to insure the privacy of its guests. I must say that despite it being a public beach, I never found it crowded and often was the only one in sight when I swam in the morning.
Another advantage of the Savoy’s location is that you can walk to other places, to restaurants and bars, to shops, to other hotels if you like. Some places have a discount arrangement among them so you can eat out for a modest discount. Note that eating in the Seychelles is very expensive, since all the food is imported.
But less expensive food can be gotten either from the booths at the night market that sets up three nights a week along the beach path, or from a few restaurants in the area that you can get to on foot. I hear the food at the Indian restaurant that is practically next door to the hotel is marvelous and inexpensive.
That said, eating at the Savoy is a great and effortless option, albeit pricey compared to the same fare in the US.
The Grand Savoy offers buffet meals for breakfast and dinner. Dinner menu themes change every day. If you eat enough to make a buffet worthwhile, I can recommend it highly. They really do well with the seafood Indian Ocean rim cuisine. If you want to go out, may I suggest opting to go to a local eatery on the Fiesta Latina Night. There are also à la carte eateries such as the beachside Gecko restaurant and poolside bar.
As for the rooms, I found them the perfect pitch of unpretentions comfort. I really like being able to sit outside to read or lounge. I had a pool view from my room but never found it noisy. Part of the reason might be that the pool is more like a lagoon with arms that wander rather than one big body of water where everyone swimming splashes together.
The hotel rooms circle the pool and invite community. I noticed families at the hotel and when I spoke to them, they seemed to feel that it was perfect for groups. Many hotels, because of the Seychelles Island zoning laws forbidding construction higher than the palms, have gone the individual villa route. The Savoy does not have villas on the property, so rather than trying to give everyone an isolated escape, it is built for people who want to enjoy their time with others.
Finally, no review would be complete without a nod to the friendliness of the people at the hotel. The Seychellois people in general are both kind and intelligent. They are the icing on the cake of any stay on the islands.
